What is a Notary Public?

Core Notarial Acts

Types of notary services that a Notary Public can provide in Texas (and generally across most states):

Acknowledgments
Verifying that a signer personally appeared, was identified, and willingly signed a document.
Commonly used for deeds, mortgages, and powers of attorney.

Jurats (Oaths & Affirmations)
The signer swears or affirms that the contents of a document are true.
Often used for affidavits and sworn statements.
 
Oaths & Affirmations (Standalone)
Administering a verbal oath or affirmation without a document attached.

Copy Certification (Where Allowed)
Certifying that a photocopy of a non-public record (like a diploma, letter, or contract) is a true copy of the original.
 
Signature Witnessing
Confirming that a person signed a document in the Notary’s presence.
